An 8x6 garden shed is one of the most popular shed sizes for UK gardens. At approximately 2.4m x 1.8m, it gives you considerably more usable space than a small storage shed without taking over the garden.

But is an 8x6 shed actually big enough for what you need? Here is what to consider before you buy.

What Can You Fit in an 8x6 Shed?

An 8x6 gives you 48 square feet of floor space, making it a useful all-round garden building. Depending on how you organise it, an 8x6 wooden shed can accommodate items such as:

  • Lawnmower and garden machinery
  • Bikes
  • Garden tools
  • Shelving and storage boxes
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Garden furniture and cushions
  • DIY tools and equipment

There is also enough room to create a small workbench area while retaining useful storage space. For many buyers, this is what makes the 8x6 such a practical middle ground.

8x6 Storage Shed or 8x6 Workshop?

How you intend to use the building should influence its specification. For straightforward garden storage, a standard single-door layout may be all you need.

If you regularly move larger machinery or equipment, double doors can make access considerably easier. If you're planning to use your 8x6 as a small workshop, window position becomes more important. Natural light over a workbench can make the available space much more useful.

This is where buying a made-to-order shed has an advantage.

Make Your 8x6 Shed Work for You

Puffin Sheds are made to order, so you don't have to accept a fixed standard layout. Depending on the model, you can:

  • Add extra windows
  • Change window positions
  • Add another door
  • Change to double doors
  • Alter door positioning
  • Upgrade the standard roofing felt to an EPDM rubber roof

These changes can make a significant difference to how practical an 8x6 shed is once you start using it.

Don't Ignore the Floor

Before buying an 8x6 shed, check what you're actually getting underneath your equipment. Puffin Sheds use an 18mm structural plywood floor supported by 45mm x 45mm framing. We don't use OSB for our shed floors. That matters if you're planning to store a mower, tools, bikes or other heavier equipment rather than a few empty garden pots.

Pressure Treated from the Start

Our 8x6 sheds are manufactured using timber pressure treated with Tanalith E preservative. The 45mm x 45mm timber framing, redwood shiplap cladding and other timber components are treated for long-term outdoor use.

Cut timber is also protected with end-grain preservative during manufacture. It means treatment isn't an optional upgrade added after you've chosen the shed. It's part of how we build them.

Is an 8x6 Shed Worth Buying?

If you want more than basic tool storage but don't need a large workshop, an 8x6 garden shed is a very useful size. It provides enough space for garden machinery, bikes, tools and general storage while remaining suitable for many typical UK gardens.

With Puffin Sheds, you can then adjust the doors, windows and roofing options to make that 8x6 space work properly for you.
