10x6 Garden Sheds – More Storage Without the Extra Depth

A 10x6 garden shed gives you 60 square feet of nominal floor space, but its proportions are what make this size particularly useful.

At 10ft long and 6ft deep, it provides substantially more storage than a compact shed without requiring the 8ft depth of a larger 10x8 building.

For gardens where you have plenty of length but don't want a shed projecting too far into the garden, a 10x6 can be a very practical choice.

Why Choose a 10x6 Shed?

The long rectangular footprint gives you plenty of wall space for shelving, tools and equipment while retaining useful access through the building. Depending on how you arrange it, a 10x6 could accommodate:

• Lawnmower and garden machinery
• Bicycles
• Garden tools
• Shelving and storage boxes
• Folding garden furniture
• Power tools
• A small workbench or tool station

Unlike a smaller storage shed, you have enough length to start creating separate areas inside rather than stacking everything into one space.

10x6 vs 8x6 – What Does the Extra 2ft Give You?

An 8x6 shed provides 48 sq ft of nominal floor area. A 10x6 provides 60 sq ft.

That's 25% more floor area while keeping exactly the same 6ft depth.

Those extra two feet could become a dedicated shelving section, bike storage area or space for a small workbench.

If an 8x6 feels slightly restrictive but you don't want a deeper shed taking up more of the garden, a 10x6 is a logical step up.

What About a 10x8 Shed?

A 10x8 increases the nominal floor area to 80 sq ft, giving you another 20 sq ft compared with a 10x6.

If maximum storage or workshop space is the priority and your garden can comfortably accommodate it, the larger footprint may make sense.

But bigger isn't automatically better.

Before ordering, mark both footprints on the ground. You'll quickly see whether the additional 2ft of depth gives you useful space or simply takes away more garden than necessary.

Plan the Doors and Windows Around the Space

The shape of a 10x6 gives you several layout possibilities.

You might prefer the entrance on the longer side so different areas of the shed are immediately accessible.

Alternatively, an entrance at the end may work better where the shed sits in a narrower part of the garden.

If you're planning a workbench, think about window position too. Natural light near the working area may be more useful than simply accepting a standard layout.

Storage Shed or Small Workshop?

At 10x6, a shed can comfortably become more than somewhere to store the mower. There's enough space to combine storage with a small workbench or hobby area, particularly if shelving and wall storage are planned properly.

Headroom can also be adjusted. Our standard garden sheds generally maintain approximately 6ft internal height at the lowest point, but because every Puffin Shed is made to order, we can increase the height where required.

Built to the Same Puffin Sheds Specification

Our 10x6 sheds use the same core specification as our other garden buildings:

• 45mm x 45mm planed timber framing
• Framing at no more than 450mm centres
• 14.5mm rebated redwood shiplap cladding
• 18mm structural plywood floor
• 18mm plywood roof
• Timber pressure treated with Tanalith E preservative

Exposed timber cuts are also protected with end-grain preservative during manufacture. Choosing a different shed size doesn't mean choosing a different standard of construction.

Choose Your Roof and Roofing

A 10x6 can be available with a pent or apex roof, depending on the model, and an EPDM rubber roof upgrade is also available.
