6x4 vs 8x6 Shed – How Much Space Do You Gain?

This is where the numbers are useful. A 6x4 shed provides 24 sq ft of nominal floor area. An 8x6 shed provides 48 sq ft. So although an 8x6 doesn't sound dramatically bigger when you're looking at the dimensions, it actually gives you twice the nominal floor area.

If you're choosing between the two, mark both footprints out where you intend to put the shed. It is a simple way of seeing how much garden each size occupies before making your decision.

If an 8x6 fits comfortably and you expect your storage requirements to increase, the additional space may be worthwhile. If space is limited and you only need straightforward garden storage, the 6x4 has a clear advantage.

Think About Access, Not Just Floor Space

On a compact shed, the position of the door can make a surprisingly large difference. Think about the items you will move in and out most often. Where will the lawnmower sit? Will shelving obstruct the entrance? Can you reach the tools at the back without removing everything in front of them?

Small Shed Doesn't Have to Mean Lightweight Shed

That includes 45mm x 45mm planed timber framing, 14.5mm rebated redwood shiplap cladding and an 18mm structural plywood floor supported by 45mm framing.

The roof also uses 18mm plywood decking. Our timber components are pressure treated using Tanalith E preservative, with exposed cuts protected using end-grain treatment during manufacture.

In other words, 6x4 describes the size of the building, not a lower build specification.

Pent or Apex 6x4 Shed?

Both roof styles can work well on a compact garden shed.

A pent shed has a single-sloping roof and can work particularly well where you want a simple roofline alongside a fence or wall.

An apex shed gives you the traditional two-sided roof with a central ridge. We manufacture both styles, so this largely comes down to the position of the building and your preference.
