A clear, penetrating treatment for seasoned pressure-treated timber sheds. Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment provides long-term water-repellent protection against moisture and weather exposure, helping protect the timber while maintaining its natural appearance. For newly installed sheds, use our New Shed Timber Protection instead.
Once the timber in your Puffin Shed has had time to naturally season, ongoing protection against moisture and weather exposure can help keep it protected and looking its best.
Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is a clear, penetrating treatment particularly suited to pressure-treated and tanalised exterior timber. It provides excellent water repellency and additional protection from the elements, making it an ideal ongoing maintenance treatment for timber sheds and workshops.
This is our ongoing treatment for seasoned timber rather than our recommended treatment for a newly installed shed.
New pressure-treated timber naturally contains moisture and continues to dry and adjust to its surroundings after installation.
For a new Puffin Shed, we recommend Owatrol Seasonite – New Shed Timber Protection, which is specifically designed to help regulate moisture during this initial seasoning period.
Once your shed has seasoned and the timber is sufficiently dry, Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment can be used for its ongoing protection and maintenance.
Your Puffin Shed is manufactured using pressure-treated timber to provide long-lasting protection against rot and fungal decay. However, pressure treatment and ongoing weather protection perform different jobs.
Pressure treatment protects the timber against rot and decay.
Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment helps protect the timber against moisture and continued weather exposure.
Exterior timber is continually exposed to rain, sunshine, changing temperatures and humidity. Adding a water-repellent treatment helps reduce the amount of moisture the timber absorbs during changing weather conditions.
Its penetrating formulation protects the timber without creating the thick surface coating associated with conventional paints.
Regular treatment can help:
Puffin Sheds supplies Clear Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment.
We've deliberately selected the clear version for customers who want to protect their shed without painting or staining it a different colour.
As with penetrating timber treatments, application can temporarily deepen or enhance the natural appearance of the timber.
Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment should be applied once new pressure-treated timber has had sufficient time to season and is suitably dry for treatment.
There isn't a single period that applies to every shed. Drying time will depend on the timber, weather, time of year and the location of your building.
If your Puffin Shed has only recently been installed, see our New Shed Timber Protection instead.
The timber should be clean, dry and free from dirt or surface contamination before treatment.
Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment can be applied by brush in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Multiple coats are recommended for optimum protection, allowing the appropriate drying time between coats.
Always follow the application and safety instructions provided with the product.
Coverage is approximately 5–6m² per litre per coat, depending on the condition, surface finish and absorbency of the timber.
For optimum protection, Barrettine recommends multiple coats, so remember to account for this when calculating how much treatment you require.
We offer two practical sizes:
2.5 Litres – suitable for smaller sheds and maintenance applications.
5 Litres – ideal for larger sheds, workshops or where multiple coats are required.
For particularly large buildings, multiple containers can simply be purchased.
If you're unsure how much you'll need for your Puffin Shed, contact us with your shed size and we'll be happy to advise.
There isn't a fixed maintenance interval suitable for every shed.
How quickly the timber requires further treatment will depend on its location and exposure to sunshine, rain and prevailing weather.
A simple indication is how readily the timber begins absorbing water. When the water-repellent effect noticeably reduces and moisture starts soaking into the timber rather than being repelled from the surface, it's a good time to consider another treatment.
Regular maintenance helps provide continued protection against moisture and weather exposure throughout the life of your shed.
We've deliberately kept shed care simple.
